“My Body Is My Teammate”

  • by

Thea James shared this sentiment in our podcast interview this week.  She said that at the beginning of her journey with Post Concussion Syndrome, she would get angry with her body for not being able to do what it used to be able to do or for being so tired or in pain so often.

With time and experience and the wisdom that that offers, she has come to view her body as her teammate and to acknowledge that her body and brain are both showing up the best they can — they give her signals to indicate what they need, and they are doing the best they are able to.

She wrote down and read often this mantra:

“Thank you, body, thank you, brain, for showing up for me.”

This is such good advice for all of us to remember.  As we learn to embrace this notion, I believe it will give us greater self-compassion and the ability to recognize and feel gratitude for the ways our brain and body are serving us well. It will also help to open us up to celebrating the wins we do experience.

I hope you’ll listen to Thea’s story — it is inspiring and uplifting and yet very real and down-to-earth. https://youtu.be/If1EpvJpoE8?si=x55c151F_vE5eCNj
