Summer is upon us (for those of you in the Northern Hemisphere 🙂
This often comes with traveling for reunions or vacations or business trips, etc.
Navigating airports and new places can be hard and overstimulating for anyone, but for people dealing with post concussion symptoms, these challenges can feel entirely overwhelming.
I recently had a conversation with some friends who went on a trip to New York City and had some excellent advice for people who are traveling with a head injury.
Here are some recommendations for travel:
-Get clear on your priorities (if you can only do one or two things in a day, which things are most important to you?)
-If traveling by plane, get a window seat if possible
-Plan in rest breaks
-Bring multiple options for hearing protection
-Plan for temperature control (i.e.: hand warmers or cooling spray bottle/fan combos)
-Small, light-weight camping chairs may be helpful for resting on the go
-Nature is rejuvenating — if possible, plan to spend some time in nature
-Hydration is essential — bring water! Also, bring snacks to fuel your brain.
-If traveling with a friend, communicate to them ahead of time what your needs might be if symptoms increase during the travel
