My friend shared this brilliant insight yesterday that I want to share with you – she had an experience where she’d had a stressful day at work and then was in the car with her teenager who was learning to drive, and she was feeling very much in the fight or flight state. Thanks to our coaching together, she recognized that she just needed to focus on calming her system down, and was able to focus on that, instead of letting her mind run off on spinning thoughts trying to make sense of why she was in this funk.
It is so human of us to try and understand why we’re feeling the way we are, and telling ourselves stories and making meaning behind things that may very well just be physiology – when we’re in a heightened state, it doesn’t feel good, so the natural tendency is to try to understand why by making it mean something bad about ourselves or other people or the situation.
But most of the time, if we can recognize we’re in that state and focus on relaxing our body instead of spinning out in our thoughts, we can get to a calm state where we actually can access our higher thinking and understand with more clarity what is going on for us.
