Life Balance

  • by

I recently made a social media post about life balance and I wanted to share those insights with you here in case you missed it. This analogy has been very helpful for me in helping reduce guilt and stress and to see things from more of a big picture standpoint.

I used to think that when people would talk about life balance, they meant that it was possible to have all of one’s time and activities and energy balanced equally among the different demands of life with school or family or work or church or health, etc.

For a long time, I figured I was doing something wrong or hadn’t quite figured life out because I had not reached that point of “balance.”

I have come to realize that balance is not so much about equally distributing my time and energy amongst all of the competing demands, but it’s more about leaning into the things that I feel are most important or that need my attention more at the moment, realizing that at some point I will lean back the other direction.

I have come to think about it as if I am standing on a raft in the ocean.

Inevitably, one section of the raft will rise higher than the others because of the waves underneath, and I will need to lean in that direction to remain balanced and upright.

And then, because the ocean is never still, another wave will come and another section of the raft will elevate and I will need to lean in that direction.

The point is to stay upright, and sometimes that requires leaning. Sometimes in life, certain people or projects or experiences require more of our time and attention, and it’s okay to lean into those areas of our life that feel bigger.

Just know that life is ever-shifting and changing, and the things that feel big will change, and we’ll lean into those as they rise up, and it’s all okay.

You’re doing great!

Cheers,
Bethany
