| I shared this on social media recently, but wanted to pass it on here as well in case you didn’t see it. 3 of my 4 boys are colorblind. (Thanks, Dad…) The other day, my daughter handed her phone to one of her colorblind brothers and asked him to color in a picture with the colors he thought looked normal. The attached picture is the result. No amount of arguing could convince him that this wasn’t ‘normal’ coloring. (He knew on some level but couldn’t see what was off, and also I think he just enjoyed the debate, haha.) It’s just a good reminder that we don’t all see things the same way. The eyes we see things through (and our past experience history, and nervous system state) impact our perceptions of reality. That’s true for us and for every other person we interact with. So next time you don’t see eye to eye with someone on a subject or a shared experience, give yourself and them a little bit of grace and recognize that different perspectives are normal and necessary, and can bring new and important light, color, and clarity to life’s challenges. Sending good vibes at this crazy time of year. Cheers, Bethany Lewis, OTR/L |
